Show Me the Money

April 30, 2014 Circa Creative Studios
My-Kind-Of-Town.jpg

As an artist, I dislike self promotion. My goal with my art is to paint decent paintings, connect with other artists, and share what I've learned with those willing to listen. I do like to eat and pay my bills, though, so marketing my artwork is important.

Big Idea

I am currently working on a 48x48 painting, which is rather large for me. When I started it, I realized why I tend to paint smaller...I am 5’4” (almost). I either need to use a ladder or a very long brush!

"A very good career choice would be to gravitate toward those activities and to embrace those desires that harmonize with your core intentions, which are freedom and growth—and joy. Make a "career" of living a happy life..."

Fancy Pants

January 15, 2014 Circa Creative Studios

Ever bought your cat an expensive, high tech toy only to watch her go straight for a piece of string? Did you get your child that pricey, must-have toy for Christmas and watch him promptly play with the box it came in?

I just returned from a painting trip in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. What a beautiful town and harbor! I have always been drawn to the water and all activity surrounding it, and on this particular trip the action revolved around, you guessed it, lobster.

I recently taught a 3-day workshop in Easton, Maryland in which I had 17 students. That is quite a large class, but it went smoothly because of the incredible work ethic and great attitudes of the participants. What a great bunch!

Last week I posted images showing the first stage sketches of four new paintings and promised I’d post the finishes. I am still working on one but these three are finished and off to galleries to find their forever homes.

Gotta Start Somewhere

studio_sketch3.jpeg

I have been traveling constantly since April on plein air painting trips. I just recently was able to get back in the studio, and it has been daunting. Ever watch a dog spin around forever trying to find just the right position for a nap? It’s been kind of like that for me ...

I have been participating in various competitions lately, including several plein air events. After each one my family, friends, and supporters ask excitedly, “Did you win anything?”

Hi, I’m Anne and I am an introvert (Hi, Anne!). There, I said it. Being introverted does not mean I’m shy. It means that first thing in the morning, I have trouble dealing with anyone other than my cats. I find solitude to be rejuvenating, and I need a lot of it...

The Plein Air Experience

May 31, 2013 Circa Creative Studios

“En plein air”, or “in the open air”, describes the act of painting outdoors. The plein air experience is very different than studio painting and can be quite challenging. Besides battling insects, sun, wind and other distractions, the plein air painter must capture .....

Good Value

May 4, 2013 Circa Creative Studios

The start of my paintings is what I call a value block in. Some artists draw in their shapes with lines and then begin adding color, addressing value as they go. It is solid value structure that pulls you from across a room to get a closer look at a painting.

Keeping It Fresh

May 4, 2013 Circa Creative Studios

In the first stages of my paintings I feel free, unchained by the confines of completion. This lends to a fresh and loose approach that is prevalent in my work.. But sometimes I hear a voice... tighten it up, Sister”.

The Process

May 3, 2013 Circa Creative Studios
Landscape-Demo.jpeg

As a teacher, I am more interested in my students learning how to problem solve rather than their walking away with a perfectly rendered painting. I ask them to give themselves to the process, considering each painting as an exploration to the next.
